Explore India through its cuisine: crunchy Poha Chivda recipe with photos

If you’ve ever been to India the chances are you were amazed by the diversity of crunchy snacks in local stores. One of the most popular is Poha Chivda – not only it represents a very interesting combination of tastes, but it’s also easy to make and easy to store. Besides, it’s a much more interesting alternative to the popcorn and chips:)  Thanks to our friend’s amazing mom, who was so kind to share her cooking secrets and let us observe the process, we can make this savoury mouthwatering snack anytime. And so can you – just put the ingredients together and let’s get started:)

So, to make Poha Chivda recipe you’ll need :

3 cups of poha (dry rice flakes)

1 cup of Bengal gram dal

Green chilies to taste (as you can see, out friend’s mom  used quite a lot)

Also, you’ll need 1 cup of raw peanuts, around 8 tablespoons of oil, 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds, a teaspoon of turmeric powder, salt and sugar to taste.

Making the recipe

First of all, take a large frypan or a pot, pour some oil and add a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Then add three cups of poha (rice flakes) and keep it on the fire, stirring continuously until it crumbles easily between your fingers.

Once it’s done, put the vessel with poha aside.

Pour some oil into another pot (or frying pan, it’s up to you), and fry whole raw peanuts for a couple of minutes.

Slice the coconut and fry it for a couple of minutes too. Make sure it doesn’t turn brown.

Then pour the remaining oil into a pot, add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds and let them pop. Then add chopped green chilies and fry them for a few minutes.

Add the carry leaves and mix them well.

After a minute or so add the coconut to the mix and stir it well.  Then it’s turn of the Bengal gram dal. Empty the cup into the pot, mix all the ingredients and cook it for two more minutes.


Finally, add the peanuts, salt and sugar to taste and gave the mix a good final stir. After that, empty all the ingredients into the pot with poha and mix it thoroughly.
