The Aga Khan Palace – an abode of peace and serenity in Pune

The Aga Khan Palace is a  beautiful mansion set amidst a large garden in the Yerwada neighborhood in Pune. Boasting both the historical and architectural value, this place is one of the must-visit sites in the city. Located around 7 km from the center of Pune, it retains its peaceful atmosphere and quiet feel. The Aga Khan Palace played an important role in the Indian independence movement as it served as a  place where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for two years along with his wife Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary Mahadev Desai.  They were interned here from 1942 to 1944, and this was the place where both Kasturba and Mahadev took their last breath.

My visit to the Aga Khan Palace in Pune

When I walked along the arched corridors and spacious rooms of the palace, I found myself thinking that the whole setup had very little in common with a prison in its traditional sense. Add to  that neatly trimmed lawns and large sprawling garden with shady trees and pretty flowering plants,  and you’ll know what I mean.

The Aga Khan Palace was built at the end of the 19th century by Sir Sultan Muhammed Shah, Aga Khan III. In 1969, the place was donated by his grandson Aga Khan IV to the Indian government as a sign of respect to Mahatma Gandhi and everything he’d done for the freedom of the nation.

The palace comprises a museum showcasing Ghandi’s personal items and photographs. There also were paintings depicting his life events and his symbolic role in the freedom movement which I found particularly interesting.

The Aga Khan Palace was a pleasure to photograph, with its elegant architectural patterns and soft, soothing color of the exterior with contrasting red roofs.

On the palace’s premises one can find Kasturba Gandhi’s and
Mahadev Desai’s samadhis – octagonal marble memorials with tulsi plants (holy basil) growing on top.

After walking around for quite a while, I found an open terrace cafe with the most delicious cold coffee. Just to make my visit perfect 🙂
